As we know computers are called as digital computers because of use of numbers (digits) to represent any piece of information and use this sequence of numbers to process. So any information entered into a digital system must be in the form of a digital number. A circuit called ‘encoder’ is used to change data into digital form.
We enter the decimal number from keyboard. Encoder converts the decimal number into its binary equivalent. E.g. pressing number 4 from keyboard, encoder converts to binary equivalent i.e. 0100. Computer will give output in the form of digital. So decoder is used to convert digital to decimal number, which will be displayed in the monitor.
By using digital circuits such as arithmetic logic unit (ALU), comparators, multiplexer, demultiplexer, encoder, decoder, etc...are discussed in the previous articles are interconnected to construct a digital computer.
